Nursing Staff

PICU Nurse

A PICU nurse is a highly trained and specialised nurse who will provide direct bedside care and stay in close proximity to your child 24 hours a day. PICU Nurses can be identified a green name badge, all regular staff in PICU will wear these. 

Clinical Lead Nurse

The clinical lead nurse is a specialised PICU nurse who supports the nurses working within the PICU for the shift to optimise patient care. The clinical lead can be identified by the green and white checkered sticker.

Associate Nurse Unit Manager

An associate unit manager (ANUM) is the nurse in charge of the unit for the shift and is responsible for supporting staff and families if any problems arise. The ANUM can be identified by the red and white checkered sticker.

PICU Outreach

PICU outreach nurses are expert PICU nurses who will visit your child on the ward once they have been transferred from PICU. They will ensure the child is stable and may provide additional support and education to the ward staff to assist with caring for the child. Outreach Nurses will also attend any emergency calls within the hospital.

Nursing Handover

Nursing handover occurs between 7am to 7:30am, 1pm to 1:30pm, 7pm to 7:30pm and 9pm to 9:30pm. During these times, important information about your child’s condition and care will be passed on to the next nurse caring for your child.

Education team

The education team is made up of specialised PICU nurses called ‘Educators’ and ‘Clinical Support Nurses’. This team supports all staff within PICU to develop their knowledge and skill as well as facilitate educational programs.

Nurse Unit Manager

A nurse unit manager (NUM) in partnership with the Medical Director of PICU, is responsible for the delivery of high-quality clinical care, to facilitate optimal child and family health outcomes.
The NUM will manage the day-to-day operations of PICU, ensuring exceptional care is provided to PICU patients within applicable frameworks, quality standards and legislative requirements. 

Specialty Nurses

Your child may be visited by a variety of other highly specialised nursing staff called Clinical Nurse Consultants. These nurses may be specialised in Respiratory, Oncology and Stomal Care. These nurses are experts in their field and aim to assist in providing care to your child whilst they are in PICU. Speciality team Nurses will be wearing a white name badge.
